How to Catch Redfish in the Southeast Atlantic

Peak Mar–NovUpdated August 19, 2026

The short answer

Redfish in the Southeast Atlantic hold on tidal ponds, grass flats, tidal creeks. They peak Mar–Nov. Start with gold spoon: Slow, steady roll across the flat — weedless through grass. The classic red-finder. Best on low & first of incoming on flats; flood highs put tails in the grass. Dawn & dusk in summer; mid-day is fine in winter.

What to throw for Redfish

Best first. The retrieve matters more than the lure, so each one says how to work it.

  • Gold spoon — Slow, steady roll across the flat — weedless through grass. The classic red-finder.
  • Paddletail — 3–4" on a 1/8–1/4 oz jighead; hop or slow-roll along bottom edges and drains.
  • Live shrimp — Under a popping cork along grass edges; pop it every 20–30 seconds, let it sit.
  • Cut bait — Chunk of mullet or blue crab on bottom in a creek bend — soak it, they'll find it by smell.
  • Mud minnow — On a jighead or Carolina rig near oysters when water is dirty.

Where to find them

Look for tidal ponds, grass flats, tidal creeks, oyster bars, docks and pilings.

Look for pushed water, wakes, or tails on shallow edges. Cast well ahead of moving fish — reds spook then circle back. On flood tides, walk the grass line quietly and watch for waving tails.

Check the regulations

Size and bag limits change by state and by season, and they change more often than any article gets updated. Check your state agency before you keep anything.

Sounder links the right state agency for wherever you drop a pin, and flags a fish that’s out of slot as you log it.
